Vulnerability: The Doorway to Connection
by Steve Peters, Momentum Chief
Vulnerability is the thing many men spend their lives avoiding, and the doorway to the connection they want most. After many years of working with men, I've seen that the act of saying a true thing out loud, to another person who can hear it, is often what starts the healing. Not the solution. The speaking.
The Backwards Truth
Most men think they have to figure things out before they can talk about them. They process internally, wait for solutions, and only share once it's already mostly handled. The version other people see is the version that has it together. What I've come to see is that this is exactly backwards. The healing often starts before the figuring out.
The "Me Too" Moment
A man finally says, haltingly, the thing he's been carrying alone for months or years. He thinks his version is unusual. The other men nod. One says, "I've been in that exact place." Another says, "Me too." Almost without exception, the man leaves the room lighter than he came in. That moment, in some form, is what loneliness can't survive.
What This Isn't
Vulnerability is not oversharing. It's not therapy. It's being honest about your inner life in front of another person capable of holding it. The room matters. The other man matters. The agreements matter. A men's group is one of the few places in modern life designed for exactly this kind of structure.
Where to Start
One honest sentence to one person you already trust. "I'm carrying something I haven't told anyone." "I've been feeling more alone than usual." "I'm not as okay as I look." You don't need to know what to say next. The first sentence is the door.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is vulnerability hard for men?
Most men were socialized to perform competence and hide struggle. Vulnerability runs against years of conditioning, even though it's the doorway to the connection most men want.
What's the difference between vulnerability and oversharing?
Vulnerability is being honest with someone capable of holding it. Oversharing is dumping intense content on someone who hasn't agreed to receive it. The other person matters.
How do I start being more vulnerable as a man?
One sentence at a time, to one person who can hear it. "I'm carrying something I haven't told anyone" is enough. You don't have to know what comes next.
What is the "me too" moment in a men's group?
When a man says the hard thing out loud, another man almost always responds with "I've been in that exact place." That moment is what loneliness can't survive.
Is vulnerability the same as therapy?
No. Therapy is one structured form. Men's groups are another. A close friendship is a third. Vulnerability happens wherever there's a trustworthy person to receive it.
