What Happens in a Men’s Team Meeting? The Full Structure

by Art Muir, Former Momentum Chief

A men’s team meeting typically follows four parts: opening, check-in, deeper work, and closing. Most meetings run 90 minutes to 2 hours. This structure has held up across decades of men’s groups because it balances predictability with space for real conversation.

If you’re considering joining a men’s team, knowing what actually happens in a meeting tends to dissolve most of the hesitation. It’s less dramatic and more useful than most men imagine.

1. The Opening

Meetings begin with a brief opening: a moment of silence, a read-aloud statement of purpose, or a round of acknowledging who’s present. The opening is short, usually under 5 minutes, but it marks the shift from everyday life into the meeting space.

2. The Check-In

Every man gets a timed window, usually 5 to 10 minutes — to share what’s happening in his life. This is not a discussion. Others listen without interrupting, advising, or problem-solving. By the time everyone has checked in, the group has a clear picture of where each man is.

3. Deeper Work

After check-ins, the group identifies one or two men whose situation calls for deeper attention. That man gets extended time to explore his situation while others listen, ask clarifying questions, and reflect back what they hear. This is where the real work of the group happens, still peer-led, still not advice-giving.

4. The Closing

The meeting closes with a brief round, a word, a commitment, an acknowledgment. Closing rituals give the meeting a clear ending and help members land back in their regular lives without carrying everything forward.

Why This Structure Works

The 4-part structure protects the meeting from the 3 common failure modes: rushing past difficult topics, letting one man monopolize the room, and turning peer support into advice-giving. Every section has a clear purpose and a time boundary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in a men’s group meeting?

A typical meeting has four parts: a brief opening, a timed check-in from every member, deeper work with one or two men, and a short closing round. Meetings usually run 90 minutes to two hours.

How long does a men’s team meeting last?

Most men’s team meetings last 90 minutes to two hours. Shorter meetings struggle to get past check-ins; longer ones tend to drain members over time.

Do men have to talk in a men’s group?

Every man gets a check-in window, but no one is forced to share more than they want. “I’m good, listening tonight” is always a valid check-in.

Is there an agenda in a men’s group?

There is a consistent four-part structure (opening, check-in, deeper work, closing), but no pre-set topics. Each meeting follows what’s actually present in the men’s lives that week.
